Gravitationally distorted P - Cygni profiles from outflows near compact objects
نویسنده
چکیده
We consider resonant absorption in a spectral line in the outflowing plasma within several tens of Schwarzschild radii from a compact object. We take into account both Doppler and gravitational shifting effects and re-formulate the theory of P-Cygni profiles in these new circumstances. It is found that a spectral line may have multiple absorption and emission components depending on how far the region of interaction is from the compact object and what is the distribution of velocity and opacity. Profiles of spectral lines produced near a neutron star or a black hole can be strongly distorted by Doppler blue-, or redshifting, and gravitational red-shifting. These profiles may have both redand blue-shifted absorption troughs. The result should be contrasted with classical P-Cygni profiles which consist of red-shifted emission and blue-shifted absorption features. We suggest this property of line profiles to have complicated narrow absorption and emission components in the presence of strong gravity may help to study spectroscopically the innermost parts of an outflow.

Aims. As part of the Red MSX Source Survey of Massive Young Stellar Objects (MYSOs) we have conducted multi-wavelength follow up observations of the well-known object. We present our data on this object, whose near-infrared spectrum is exceptional and place these in context with previous observations Methods. Our observations of V645 Cyg included near/mid infrared imaging observations, 13 CO 2-...
متن کاملAn X-ray Jet from a White Dwarf – Detection of the Collimated Outflow from Ch Cygni with Chandra
Most symbiotic stars consist of a white dwarf accreting material from the wind of a red giant. A growing number of these objects have been found to produce jets. Analysis of archival Chandra data of the symbiotic system CH Cygni reveals faint extended emission to the south, aligned with the optical and radio jets seen in earlier HST and VLA observations. CH Cygni thus contains only the second k...
متن کاملON THE LACK OF CORRELATION BETWEEN Mg II 2796, 2803 Å AND LYMAN α EMISSION IN LENSED STAR-FORMING GALAXIES
We examine the Mg II 2796, 2803 Å, Lyman α, and nebular line emission in five bright star-forming galaxies at 1.66 < z < 1.91 that have been gravitationally lensed by foreground galaxy clusters. All five galaxies show prominent Mg II emission and absorption in a P Cygni profile. We find no correlation between the equivalent widths of Mg II and Lyman α emission. The Mg II emission has a broader ...
متن کاملVariability of the X-ray P Cygni Line Profiles from Circinus X-1 near Zero Phase
The luminous X-ray binary Circinus X-1 has been observed twice near zero orbital phase using the High-Energy Transmission Grating Spectrometer (HETGS) onboard Chandra. The source was in a high-flux state during a flare for the first observation, and it was in a low-flux state during a dip for the second. Spectra from both flux states show clear P Cygni lines, predominantly from H-like and He-li...
